I found this picture of a porch similar to what I envision for the new entry to the house. I know you did not mention a roof in the Spec Sheet, but I do want a roof over the entry, even though it will have to be re-built when we add a second story.
When we add the second story, I do not intend to build over the porch (but maybe you will change my mind when we get around to drawing up plans!)

What I like about this porch -
- shed roof
- traditional railing
- square columns - with half columns at the wall of house
- trim detail
What I do not like -
- hand rail a bit clunky - would like something a little more refined
- bottom newel posts too big IMO
What I want different about our porch -
- center the steps on the two windows
- I hope that means we do not need two columns at the top of the stairs, but rather two newel posts. In other words, you can get away with one column on the corner and half columns at the walls. You tell me what will work.
